Energy Finance Analyst - Australian Coal Sector

Australia/South Asia · Melbourne, Victoria
Department Australia/South Asia
Employment Type Full-Time
Minimum Experience Mid-level

The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) is seeking an experienced financial professional with knowledge of, and interest in, the Australian coal sector and to evaluate how this sector is being impacted by the global energy system transition towards decarbonisation. This position is for a remote work-based role and candidates may be located anywhere in Australia.

Primary Purpose

The Energy Finance Analyst will conduct and disseminate financial analysis on the Australian thermal and coking coal mining sectors amid the transition to new energy technology. In the context of Australian coal mining, this means critically analyzing the future of the sector amid technology transition in power generation and steel manufacturing in Australia’s key coal export destinations and as global capital moves to align with a global net zero emissions target for 2050. The role will also contribute to a growing topic of interest globally – the development of long-term plans to responsibly manage excess, stranded coal mines and associated rail and port capacity as demand goes into permanent decline.

The successful candidate must possess a commitment to IEEFA’s mission to accelerate the transition to a diverse, sustainable, and profitable energy economy. The analyst needs to be self-motivated, able to work independently, able to multi-task, set priorities and meet deadlines with limited direction while working remotely.
