The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) is seeking a Research Associate for a contracted consultant role based in Asia. This position is suitable for any location within Asia.


The Research Associate works with IEEFA’s Asia team on high priority research projects and develops core country and market data sets covering relevant energy market trends. Success in this role is interpreting information from multiple sources using a variety of techniques, ranging from simple data aggregation and modeling to the creation of complex data sets.


IEEFA is a public interest think-tank that conducts research and analysis on financial and economic issues related to energy markets, trends and policies.  Headquartered in the United States, IEEFA has a team of analysts and communications personnel located across the globe.  Our dynamic Asia based team works collaboratively with IEEFA internationally and in the region across different research areas covering the coal, gas, and electricity markets.  The IEEFA Asia team works virtually.  In Asia, team members are based in Hong Kong, Jakarta, Hanoi and Australia.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Partners with senior analysts to source, track, and analyze key data sets needed to support ongoing research on energy transition issues.
  • Communicates research findings to stakeholders through written reports, presentations, and briefs.
  • Works with country and industry-specific energy data to create charts, figures, and tables that convey trends.
  • Uses databases and spreadsheets to collect, analyze and transform data.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 Required Skills/Abilities

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills related to energy, power, and climate risk issues.
  • Ability to identify and analyze diverse sources of country-level and corporate data on energy and power usage.
  • Ability to research current issues associated with the energy transition from diverse sources including academic papers, new media, company financial reporting and industry webinars.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver work products and analysis in English.
  • Familiarity with key policy and financial market trends driving the energy transition globally and in the Asian region.
  • Awareness of the analytical style used by organizations such as IEEFA and other energy research organizations.
  • Communicates effectively verbally and in writing, clearly conveying information and ideas.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Must be self-motivated, able to work independently, able to multi-task, set priorities and meet deadlines with limited direction while working remotely.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, or related software.
  • Team oriented with a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Asian language fluency a plus. 

Education & Experience

  • A minimum of two to four years’ relevant research experience in finance, energy, engineering or a related field.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in economics, business, finance, mathematics, engineering, environmental studies or relevant fields

Term and Schedule

The Research Associate is a full-time position, flexibility in days and hours worked will be considered for a qualified candidate.  No sponsorship is available for this position.


Some travel may be required (when it becomes possible).  IEEFA hosts an annual conference in New York City each June. All global team members attend and participate fully in the conference and the IEEFA team retreat which follows the conference.
